Gateway Arts District officials have hired a firm to brand the district as an attractive area for artists, consumers and families, a step they say is necessary to compete against art districts elsewhere in the region. Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville make up the Gateway Arts District, an area the state designated as an official arts district in 2001 in an effort to revitalize the southern portion of the Route 1 corridor. Businesses created to promote the arts and artists working in the area are eligible for tax breaks.
