2016 Highlights

• Provided assistance to 45 individual requests for assistance, resulting in the creation or retention of 29 jobs.
• Provided construction management and redevelopment activity in 3 municipalities, including the Three Brothers Shopping Center in Bladensburg, Sis’s Tavern in North Brentwood, 4314 Farragut St in Hyattsville.
• Pursued development projects and opportunities in Hyattsville as well as 8 adjacent communities, including the 4 TNI neighborhoods described below.
• Obtained permission from DPWT to wrap 11 Traffic Boxes in 4 TNI neighborhoods: Landover, Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights, Coral Hill/Suitland, and Hyattsville.
• Obtained permission from M-NCPPC to facilitate the future installation of sculptural wayfinding kiosks and artworks along the NW + NE Branch Anacostia River Trails, touching 3 municipalities: College Park, Riverdale Park, and Hyattsville.
• 5 new locations for year-long sculpture commissions as part of the Riverdale Park Public Art Initiative.
• Coordinated the 9th Annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival, known as “Arts & Ales” – featuring 130+ exhibiting artists and artisans, 24 Maryland Breweries, 6 45-min.performances, and 6 food vendors/trucks. 5,000 visitors in attendance.
• 98 HCDC-owned tents rented at discounted rate to area community stakeholders, including Arts Festival artists.
• A Program of the CDC, the Creative Edge Studio Collaborative held 2 signature events, 6 screenings, 3 artist talks, and 7 additional networking events. An estimated 120 digital media artists attended these events.
• Co-sponsored the International Film Series at the Hyattsville Memorial Library for the 5th consecutive year.
• Published for Public Distribution: Gateway Arts District Arts Learning Guide (distributed Jan 2017), Shop Small Guide (Nov 2016), 2016 Arts & Ales Program Book, and republished Welcome Guide and Dining Guide (Fall 2016). Spring 2016 E-Newsletter.
• Responded to 1,250+ telephone calls for information and technical assistance. The CDC is currently a 3-person team, open weekdays during normal business hours.
