Press: Area artist wins Hyattsville public art contest

Alan Binstock, an artist based in the Gateway Arts District, won a juried competition for his sculpture proposal, “A Pilgrim’s Quandary.” The Hyattsville Community Development Corp. and Post Properties held the competition. The winning sculpture will be placed in a public space at Post Park, called Art on the Plaza. The luxury apartment complex is schedule to open in April 2009 and is located at 3300 East West Highway in Hyattsville. Binstock’s sculpture is nearly 2,000 lbs. and 17 feet tall. It will be made from stainless steel, silicon bronze and glass and will have a glass orb at the core of it. Entries came from around the country, and the selection panel review submissions from eight qualifying sculptors. Other finalists in the competition include Barron Naegel, Carl Wright, Don Lawler, Time Tate, Matt Kargol, Michael Szabo and Mark Castator.
