Call for Playwright (due 10/19/18) – Mapping Racism Project

In partnership with our friends at Ally Theatre Company and Joe’s Movement Emporium:

Special Project: MAPPING RACISM
Ally, in partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium and The Hyattsville CDC, has a very exciting opportunity for a playwright and we want to extend to our supporters and followers for submission. We are on a tight timeline so the playwright should be comfortable with working quickly and fast deadlines.
Project Description and Details: A $4000 Grant has been awarded to Joe’s for the creation of a short play centered around Restricted Deed Covenants, which, while illegal, still exist on many lease agreements today. In partnership with the Hyattsville Development Corporation, Joe’s has been tasked with creating a short play that addresses the racial and racist implications of these RDCs. Joe’s has asked Ally to lead this project.
Ally’s commissioned playwright will be provided research and local stories collected by Hyattsville CDC to write a 30-45 minute play that will receive a staged reading in January 2019. The play will then be performed in full in May. It will have 2 performances at Joe’s and 1 performance at another TBD location in Hyattsville. We are providing $1000 to the playwright for this work.

If interested, please submit a writing sample to, Subject Line: MAPPING RACISM SUBMISSION. Deadline for submission isthis Friday, October 19th and we will make a decision by the end of the month with a goal to have the playwright starting research and a first draft in early November.
Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. Hope to hear from you!!
