In 2006, the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (CDC) organized and sponsored an evening concert entitled “The Immigrant’s Voice in Hyattsville.” The evening’s program consisted of two sets of performances. The first being a Poetry Reading based upon works written by 4th year ESOL students of Northwestern High School entitled “Postcards from my Country”, followed by a performance of world-renowned Iraqi Oud virtuoso Rahim AlHaj: a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist.
With the success of the event, thanks to the participating students and their families, the Hyattsville CDC sponsored the Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House’s 2008 evening event featuring the richly imagistic “Postcards from my Country” Poetry Readings of the 4th year ESOL students of Northwestern High School to the Hyattsville community.
