Across the state and county, retailers and residents will be following up Black Friday with Small Business Saturday.

Since 2010, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been designated Small Business Saturday in an effort to encourage shoppers to spend money in locally-owned establishments rather than national corporate chains. This year, it falls on Nov. 26, and county and state officials are encouraging residents to take part.

Credit card giant American Express started Small Business Saturday, and they continue to support the effort.

“Since we are overwhelmed with Black Friday and Cyber Monday ads and promotions to spend our money at the big chain and online retailers, I hope we also remember to patron all of our very special independent, family owned, and locally owned businesses throughout Prince George’s County this holiday season,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
