Hyattsville, MD –The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation in collaboration with Washington Metro Transit Area Authority Art in Transit, the City of Hyattsville, Gilbane Development Company, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and local donors are pleased to announce “Bursting on the Scene”, a community paint project on Saturday, June 18th from 11 am -6 pm.

We are excited to announce that the designs of Iman Abdul-Ali and Skuda Gold were selected for the 2022 mural art. In May 2017, HCDC previously produced ‘Bursting on the Scene, a community painting event where artists and residents transformed the underpass at the West-Hyattsville Metro Station into a vibrant concrete canvas of colorful and locally inspired work of art. This year we are eager to do it again and engage the community to take part in beautifying and generating new public art.

Iman Abdul-Ali and Skuda Gold are local Hyattsville residents and their proposed design has captured the essence of community in a growing and changing environment. The artists’ designs are postcard picture-like, depicting organic shapes of wildlife on geometric fields. The artists’ designs were chosen by juried selection from a pool of 13 submissions. Both artists have a background in arts education and on the day of the event will guide residents to help paint a high-quality mural by combining a grid drawing technique to map out the color by numbers approach to make painting the mural a fun, collaborative experience for the community. The event is free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome to paint. Guests are encouraged to bring bottled water, sunscreen, and outdoor chairs to enjoy the paint day event. ¡Se Habla Español! Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by and under the supervision of a responsible adult.

Media and community are cordially invited to a zoom meeting to meeting to ‘Meet the Artists’, where the selected design will be revealed, schedule for next week. A media advisory to follow along with the artists’ conceptual renderings.
