Bursting on the Scene

HyCDC in partnership with WMATA’s Art-In-Transit Program, commissioned muralists Cory Stowers and Henry Portillo to lead a paint-by-numbers community mural painting day on two wall sections of the pedestrian underpass at the West Hyattsville Metro Station.

The project involved two years of communication between WMATA and the CDC, multiple community meetings, door-by-door visits to local businesses, and culminated in a day-long community place-making event on Saturday, May 20th, 2017.

Bursting on the Scene, like its predecessor on Route 1, Bursting in Air in 2014, merged a festive community event with a high-quality paint-by-numbers mural installation: by bringing together residents to beautify and engage the Metro Station’s public space as their own.
